Bamberg rail expansion: new idea at the last second – but now everything will be completely different?

Bamberg rail expansion: new idea at the last second - but now everything will be completely different?

The dramaturgy could hardly be more exciting: just a few days before the expected final decision on the expansion in the bamberger city council, citizens from the city are once again campaigning for alternative route proposals. The bahnsinn initiative points out that the eastern bypass, which had already been ruled out by the majority of the city council, scored 413 points when the criteria of the VWI evaluation were taken over – and thus considerably more than the ground-level bypass favored by the assessor.

And yet another throw-in makes you sit up and take notice. Robert bartsch, former spokesman for bahnsinn, advocates an eleven-kilometer-long tunnel under the existing rail line. It could stretch from the south of bamberg to the north of hallstadt and, at a maximum of 800 million euros, would be significantly less expensive than other expansion options. Bartsch, who bases this statement on figures from vieregg and robler, a munich-based firm for innovative traffic planning, believes that this tunnel will provide maximum protection for the city and its people.

Of course, there is little understanding in the city for a proposal that can hardly change the final decision shortly before the end. He has little chance for legal reasons alone. Claus reinhardt from the construction department cites one argument.
